American broadcaster, NBC Sports have reached an agreement for it showcase the Barclays Women’s Super League (WSL) matches for the 2020/21 season, making it the first time WSL matches will be shown in the United States.
Kicking off this weekend, the season-long partnership will broadcast 50 matches across all platforms, including cable network NBCSN which will show 12 matches. Games will also be available on the NBC Sports app and NBCSports.com
However, as it may be the first time the WSL will be shown in America, unfortunately, not all games will be live.
America have recently seen many of the women’s national team players make the move across the Atlantic Ocean to Europe for more game time which has caused the decision to broadcast WSL games in the US.
Atalanta Media, founded by Esmeralda Negron, former professional and sports marketer, and Hannah Brown, former Sky media rights executive, assisted with getting the deal agreed which will boost the growth of the women’s game. Increasing exposure to fans, sponsors and broadcasters.
The Football Association (FA) appointed the Pitch International agency, in December, to distribute the broadcasting rights of the WSL worldwide saying, “Pitch has the opportunity to build on the 13 overseas territories it’s already generated.”
Over-the-top (OTT) subscription streaming service DAZN will also stream 44 matches in Germany and Italy, under the new agreement with Atalanta Media.
NBC Sports president, Jon Miller, said, “We’re excited to partner with Atalanta Media to present the first US telecast of the FA WSL,
“Our opening weekend features the game’s biggest international women’s stars, and the visibility we’ll provide over the course of the season will help advance the game.”
“The quality of play and opportunity for women’s football globally has never been greater. Atalanta Media is here to provide the year-round exposure and commercialization necessary for women’s football to fulfill its potential.” Added Negron.
NBC Sports have been the American broadcaster of the English Premier League which enters its final year of the deal for the 2020-21 season.
Broadcast and media rights lead for the FA, Tom Gracey, says, “We are delighted to partner with Atalanta Media, NBC Sports and DAZN to showcase the Barclays FA Women’s Super League to viewers across America, Italy and Germany. I must also thank Pitch International for helping to agree this deal.
“The Barclays FA Women’s Super League continues to grow and with players from all over the world recognising it as a place they want to be, we want fans from those countries to be able to see them throughout the season.”
The WSL will also be available on The FA Player. An in-house OTT streaming platform where fans can watch live games if their country doesn’t broadcast matches.
