Mike Ashley’s Sports Direct will be announced as Cork’s Hurling and Gaelic Football teams sponsor in a lucrative £1.8 million deal, taking over from previous sponsors Chill Insurance.
The £1.8 million contract will run as part of a 5 year deal, in which the Newcastle United owners company will also provide performance bonuses of up to £1.8 million, including £180,000 for winning an All-Ireland title.
The deal has not been announced as of yet, but is looking to be formally confirmed by the beginning of February, just before the intercounty season begins.
Cork had previously spent eight years sponsored by Dublin-based insurance broker, Chill Insurance. The previous deal has been worth around £360,000 a year.
Sports Direct’s sponsorship of Corks County Board Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) will become the second most expensive contract in the GAA, only behind AIG’s deal with Dubin County Board GAA.
