As a result it secured an 18.6% audience share. in addition Twitch streams also played a part as a stream of the game carried out by Ibai Llanos, drew an average 343,000 viewers, peaking at around 500,000.
This game was considered a must see by football fans as it meant witnessing Messi’s first involvement since his summer move from La Liga giants Barcelona.
Llanos’ stream achieved an average audience of 343,000 viewers and peaked at around 500,000. In total, around two million people viewed the broadcast during the game.
Last week it emerged that Kosmos, the international sports investment firm headed up by Messi’s former teammate Gerard Piqué, had bought the rights to Ligue 1 in Spain.
ESPN reported at the time that Kosmos is planning to sublicense the rights this season, with Telecinco and Llanos only securing coverage of Messi’s debut.
Rights to French soccer’s top two tiers were previously held by Telefónica-owned pay-television channel Movistar. According to ESPN, that deal was worth less than €2.5 million (US$2.9 million) per season. Messi could make his home debut for his new club in PSG’s next game on 11th September, when newly promoted Clermont Foot travel to the Parc des Princes.
