Manchester United suffered a ‘sophisticated’ cyber attack on their systems on Friday, the club has confirmed.
The top flight English side stated that they were not aware of any breaches in personal data from the intrusion and the club’s media channels have also remained unharmed.
A statement from Manchester United read: “The club has taken swift action to contain the attack and is currently working with expert advisers to investigate the incident and minimise the ongoing IT disruption.
“Although this is a sophisticated operation by organised cyber criminals, the club has extensive protocols and procedures in place for such an event and had rehearsed for this risk.
“Our cyber defences identified the attack and shut down affected systems to contain the damage and protect data.”
Manchester United have alerted the Information Commissioner’s Office and the attack is undergoing significant tracing to establish its cause.
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: “We are aware and currently investigating a cyber-related incident at Manchester United Football Club.”
