Heineken unveils F1 trophy made from recycled bottles

Heineken has unveiled the trophy design for the Formula 1 Heineken Dutch Grand Prix 2021 and W Series, which is made from recycled materials.

The beer brand is an Official Partner of both sports properties, having recently signed a deal with the W series.


The brand will celebrate the first Dutch Grand Prix since 1985, and has collaborated with Dutch designer Piet Boon to create a trophy made exclusively from recycled materials that also carries ‘historical significance and local relevance’.


The inspiration for the design was taken from the first official trophy awarded at Zandvoort in 1939, as well as the iconic green of Heineken bottles.


It is the first F1 trophy made entirely from recycled materials, with the green glass bowl created from recycled Heineken bottles and the plastic plinth formed from recycled plastic crates. Meanwhile, a presentation box will also be made from waste plywood.


Each F1 and W Series recipient will have their race position engraved by hand into their trophy using sand, a nod to the beachside location of the iconic Zandvoort racetrack, with the glass bowl mouth blown and constructed by Sommer Dutch Glass Art from famous Dutch handmade glass from Leerdam, the “City of glass”.


The iconic Dutch designer, Piet Boon said; “It’s an absolute honour to be associated with F1 and W Series and to be able to write a piece of history together with Heineken. The discipline, an incredible eye for detail and the collaboration of a racing series, certainly shares common ground with our design team.”
