Giannis Antetokounmpo joins Milwaukee Brewers ownership group

Milwaukee Bucks superstar and National Basketball Association (NBA) champion and MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo has become the first new investor to be added to Major League Baseball (MLB) team, Milwaukee Brewers, ownership group since 2005.

Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo is enjoying quite an offseason, what with his new NBA championship and NBA Finals MVP trophies. As he soaks in a season and playoffs to remember, he’s got a new gig on his hands, too.

The Milwaukee Brewers have announced that Antetokounmpo has joined their ownership group. He was officially introduced Friday at a news conference at American Family Field in Milwaukee by Brewers chairman and principal owner Mark Attanasio.

The NBA Finals MVP is the first new individual investor added to the baseball team’s ownership group since Mark Attanasio bought the franchise in 2005 for US$223 million. The pair confirmed the agreement had been finalised in May but was kept under wraps so as not to distract from the Bucks’ playoff run.

Antetokounmpo arrived in Milwaukee from Greece in 2013 and has since become one of the NBA’s biggest names. Last year, he signed a five-year contract extension worth US$228 million with the Bucks, before delivering the team’s first championship in 50 years back in July.

The 26-year-old becomes the latest sports star to invest in a Milwaukee franchise, after Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers bought a stake in the Bucks in 2018.

In a press conference last Friday, Antetokounmpo emphasised his desire to invest in the Milwaukee community that had welcomed him.

“Milwaukee made me who I am today,” he said. “It made me a better person. This is basically my home. I've become a father here. I've become a leader here. I've become a champion here, and I want to be involved.

“I want to be involved in the community as much as possible. I know Milwaukee invested a lot in me, and I want to invest a lot of me back into the city of Milwaukee.”

Attanasio added: “We are honoured to have Giannis join our team of Milwaukee Brewers investors. Giannis is a great athlete, a world champion, and a true local hero with international renown.”
