Finland's coldest town to bid for 2032 summer Olympic Games

Salla, a Lapland town that claims to be the coldest in Finland, has entered the race to host the 2032 summer Olympic Games.

Finland's coldest town to bid for 2032 summer Olympic Games

The race to host the 2032 summer Olympic Games is heating up, or should we say cooling down, after Finlands coldest town, which regularly sees temperatures drop to -50 degrees Celsius, has entered a bid alongside the likes of Jakarta, Istanbul and Seoul‑Pyongyang.

However, its official bid is to be taken with a pinch of salt, with the town's primary purpose to raise awareness on the consequences of global warming.

Announcing their candidacy at a news conference, it was admitted that it was a "crazy idea" but its purpose is of significant importance.

“Our intention here is clear: we want to keep Salla as it is, and our winters cold and full of snow,” said Erkki Parkkinen, mayor of Salla in a statement.

“So, there was this crazy idea: to host the Summer Games in one of the coldest towns on the planet.”

He later added: “If we stand back and do nothing, letting global warming prevail, we will lose our identity, and the town we love – as well as many others around the world - will cease to exist as we know it."

Salla's attempt at holding the Olympics has been done in traditional fashion though, by providing a video that is sure to catch the eye of many, especially for a summer edition of the Olympic Games, with video features including snow, people wearing shorts in snow banks and a man eating an ice cream whilst frolicking in an ice covered lake.

“I’ve never felt warmth before, but I’m sure it’s coming,” said one resident within the promotional video.

A stark warning from Parkkinen highlights the impact that global warming has had on Salla and what it could mean for the rest of the world: "Our summers are getting hotter and hotter, our winters are getting shorter and shorter we need to keep Salla icy, cold and snowy. Salla will be ready to host the Games in 2032 but at what cost?"

"If Salla is the best place to host the Games in 2032 it means the temperature didn’t stop rising.”

The International Olympic Committee is set to choose a host city for the 2032 summer Olympic Games by 2025 and Salla's bid may have to be taken seriously, following its candidacy video, official logo, website, mascot, uniform and promotional activities.
