US broadcasting network ESPN will team up with Marvel when the New Orleans Pelicans take on the Golden State Warriors on May 3 for a ‘Marvel-themed’ telecast.
In a first-of-its-kind themed alternate telecast, ESPN 2, ESPN+ and ESPN Deportes will be showing a marvel-themed telecast. This will be shown through 3D virtual characters, custom graphics and animation packages.
The telecast will be dubbed ‘NBA Special Edition Presented by State Farm: Marvel’s Arena of Heroes’. As mentioned in its name, the presentation will be sponsored in insurance company State Farm.
The marvel-themed telecast will integrate elements from an original story featuring Iron Man, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Captains America, Black Widow, and Doctor Strange throughout the game.
For fans tuning in, three star players from each team will receive ‘Marvel Hero Points’ from achievements such as points, rebounds, assists and more. Players will also lose points for mistakes such as missed field goals and free thrones, and turnovers.
Matt Kenny, ESPN vice president of programming and acquisitions said: “We’re eager for fans to experience this unique, innovative presentation that will pair Marvel and ESPN’s exceptional storytelling and production,”
“We are proud to showcase the ‘larger than life’ abilities of these NBA stars in a manner in which only Disney and Marvel can deliver.”
