2022 Commonwealth Games announce the University of Birmingham as an official partner

The 2022 Commonwealth Games have revealed the University of Birmingham as an official partner of the games.

Birmingham is the host city of the 2022 Commonwealth Games while the university campus will be the principle campus village throughout the event. Additionally, the university will be the competition venue to host the squash and hockey events.

Being an official partner will generate international exposure for the university by supporting the Queen’s Baton Relay as it travels through all the Commonwealth countries before the games begin. The games are expecting to reach a tv audience of 1.5 billion viewers worldwide providing the university the opportunity to market their teaching and research resources.

Opportunities will be offered to students and staff of the university providing them with invaluable work experience of working at a major sporting event and will help fans and athletes during their visit to the site as they have prior knowledge of the university.

Professor Sir David Eastwood, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Birmingham has commented saying, “Our partnership with the Birmingham 2022 Games is the most comprehensive university partnership in the history of the Commonwealth Games.

“Through this partnership we are delighted to be able to share our outstanding sports facilities and accommodation with athletes from across the globe as well as providing opportunities for our staff and students to engage with the Games through their research, through volunteering, and through participation.

The university are renowned for their contribution to sport being the first university in the UK to offer a Sport Science degree back in 1946. Alumni students have also competed in the games, most recently in the Gold Coast edition in 2018.

Chief Executive of Birmingham 2022, Ian Reid has said, “Obviously we’ve already been working very closely with the University, taking advantage of its world-class sporting facilities to stage two of our sports and its fantastic accommodation to use as our main campus village.

“By becoming an Official Partner, the University of Birmingham has truly underlined their considerable support for the Games.”

The university join the likes of Gowling WLG, Longines, Sunset+Vine and GI Group who are existing official partners of the games making the University of Birmingham the fifth official partner.
